Description

Governor Richard B. Ogilvie spent his career as a lawyer working in private practice and for the federal government including serving as a special assistant to the United States Attorney General. In 1961, Ogilvie was elected as sheriff for Cook County. Five years later he was elected as president of the Cook County Board of Commissioners. 

Ogilvie won the 1968 Illinois governor's race and took office in Janury 1969. During his tenure, Ogilvie successfully fought for the introduction of a state income tax and launched the "New Illinois" program which promoted economic growth via revenue sharing. Under Ogilvie, Illinois held a constitutional convention in 1970. Ogilvie lost his 1972 bid for reelection to Dan Walker.
