Kaskaskia was the center of French settlement in Illinois and became the capital of the French territory of Upper Louisiana. Between 1809 and 1818, the town was the capital of the Illinois Territory.

These sketches depict some of the more famous landmarks in Kaskaskia. These buildings and the town were destroyed by the flooding of the Mississippi River during the nineteenth century.
