Comer Cox was born in Athens, Alabama, and lived in Saint Louis, Missouri. He attended Sumner High School, the first school for African Americans west of the Mississippi River. Cox played baseball during the 1930 and 1931 seasons for the Negro National League's Nashville Elite Giants and the Negro Southern League's Cleveland Cubs. Cox later moved to Springfield, Illinois, where he became the director of the Springfield Urban League. Springfield's Comer Cox Park is named for him.
