Robert McClory won election to the Illinois House of Representatives in 1950. He went on to serve in the Illinois Senate from 1952. In 1963 he began the first of ten terms in the United States House of Representatives. McClory served in the United States House of Representatives from 1963-1983. After leaving Congress, he resumed his career as an attorney in Washington, D. C.
