General Head Quarters---State of Illinois,

Adjutant General's Office,

Springfield, May 1 1861.

His Excellency

Gov. Yates

Allow me a word or two before you make a final decision in regard to the company from Edgar County. We are anxious, very anxious to go. The company is composed of the best young men in the county. We have gone to a great deal of expense, & it will be a source of great mortification to them & myself to go home under present circumstances. You are aware that I have ever been a strong friend of yours personally and politically. I hope I shall ever be.

May I not appeal to this as a reason why we should have a place in the 6th regiment?

You will bear in mind the fact that we were the 5th accepted company in the State, and have always promptly & cheerfully obeyed orders. In conclusion, I beg of you to give us the position we ask.

Yours respectfully

Vincent Ridgely
