Washington Dec. 27, 1863

His Excellency

Richard Yates

Sir

My Son Lieut L. G. Bangs enlisted as a private on the 18th of April 1861 in what was afterwards the 19th Ill Vol. He was promoted on the 27th of Aug. 1862 to 1st Lieut and Adjutant, was wounded slightly at Chickamauga, and severely at Missionary Ridge, has had his right leg amputated above the knee, and I am now trying to get him into the Invalid Corps, and shall succeed.

My object in writing is to know if you can possibly promote him to a Captaincy. His Superior officers will tell you that he is deserving, and will go into the I.C. with the same rank which he holds in

the Vol. Service.

He will be immediately transferred, and consequently will not long stand in the way of others equally deserving, and should you grant us this favor you will lay us under lasting obligations.

The Hon I.F. Farnsworth

" Judge Norton

" I.N. Arnold, have kindly permitted me to refer to them and will if necessary write you on the subject.

Very Respectfully

Your Obt. Sevt.

J. S. Bangs
