Dear sir

Yours advising me of the receipt of a letter from Hon James Knox and your recommendation was received this morning. I regret to inform your excellency that my staff is full, and I found it absolutely necessary to fill it very soon after my arrival here, or do the duty myself. If I had a place at my disposal I would cheerfully appoint Mr. Ewing the gentleman recommended by Mr. Knox.

May I ask Your Excellency to direct the Adjutant General to forward commissions for this Regiment at the earliest practicable moment.
