Helena, Ark.

Dear General.

During my absence at New Orleans and Washington your letter requesting appointment for your Son, Lieut Temple Buford,

It would afford me sincere pleasure to give him a commission in new regiments now organizing were it possible. To secure the most practical and prompt response under recent call I have deemed it best to give all the companies the privilege of electing their own officers and those selected will be from the number who have been mainly instrumental

in recruiting the men. I enclose orders for organization from which you can clearly understand how limited my opportunities to promote meritorious young men who have seen service.

Permit me to express sympathy with you in the loss you have sustained by death of your Brother Maj Gen Buford for whom the country mourns.

Sincerely Yr friend.

Richd Yates

Governor.
