UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.

Thirty Eighth Congress

HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.

Washington City Feb. 4 1864

Gov. Yates

Ill.

Sir,

In conjunction with others I take pleasure in writing you in behalf of Mr. Temple Buford of your state - I have not known him personally a great while but have heard of his services in the Regular Army - He belonged to that branch of the Army for

considerable time, but from some difficulty in his Regt. resigned - He does not desire to quit the service of his country therefore presents himself to you for appointment in the Vol. service -

He is a son of Genl. N.B. Buford - and nephew of the late Maj. Genl. Buford - and I have no doubt he will make you a good and efficient officer -

With a hope of his success I remain Gov. most

Respectfully

Your Obt. Svt.

G. Clay Smith
