Pay Department, U.S.A., St. Louis, Mo., Feby 10th 1864.

Hon Richd Yates Governor of Ills. Springfield Ills.

Dear Governor:

Your favors both of the 5th And 8th inst are before me. I am sorry that you cannot be with us on the 22d inst. Miss Dickenson will be here at that time.

I have written to the Northern part of the State to ascertain the complexion of affairs there And to obtain some more names than I now remember for my list. I will make a list and send it

I will also strive to get away in the Spring and make a tour of the Northern Counties And try to have Yates men Elected to the Legislature. That's the point - And I think we will make it-

Of two things I am satisfied:

1st That Washburne is not the man -

2. That Lovejoy cannot be elected.

How I Swett willl [seem?] I cannot say. but who Gov Yates is And how the people throw up their hats, at the very mention of his name do know. And another thing I know that no more eloquent voice or loyal heart, or energetic mind has ever graced the roll of honorable Senators than that of Richd Yates. How all might Illinois be proud to point to the U.S. Senate and say "Here are Trumbull And Yates. And they will never die".

It must be so. Be assured Governor that nothing but the inexorable "Order And Military necessity" shall keep me away.

A payment becomes due last of Feby. That must be made. So that it will be latter part of March before I can hope to go up. But I will at once commence communication with "The Spirits', And the "Mediums" in that section. And try where all the "[illegible]" made in the right place

If at any time, Governor you feel inclined to make a speech in this City, just let me know a few days beforehand and we will arouse the people for the occasion.

Hoping Governor that your brightest anticipations in this matter may be realised And that I may have the honor of aiding no little in so happy a consummation for the noble people of Illinois, and for my best and most worthy friend. I beg leave to remain

Governor, As Ever, Your humble and Obt Servt,

Wm S Pope
