The undersigned most respectfully present for your favourable consideration the name of the bearer Calvin Durand (Now Quartermaster Sergeant in the Chicago Board of Trade Battery) for promotion to some commissioned office in the service from this State We know him intimately and know him to be capable to fill such a position with credit to himself and to the State He is brave energetic and character above reproach. He left a good mercantile position impelled by the purest patriotism and joined or enlisted as private in the battery above named has been in constant active service since now nearly two


years & now for the first time home on recruiting service. Therefore in view of his services rendered sacrifice of position his known ability energy and character we most earnestly hope & trust his application for promotion may be successful
