Bloommigton Ills Apr. 30, 1864

His Excellency

Richd Yates

Gov of Illinois

Springfield Ill.

Sir

I would respectfully state that I am at present 1st Lieut & Adjt. of the 1st Regt. Engrs. Mo. Vols. I enlisted in this regment from McLean County in this state in Sept. 1861. I served as Sergt. Major till Jany 62 when I was appointed Regimental Qr. Mr. I served in this last position till July 1862, when I was appointed to my present grade. I have been in active service since my enlistment. My object in addressing you at this time is for the purpose of procuring a transfer to some Illinois regiment. Being a resident of Illinois I desire to serve my country in my own State organizations. I must state here however that I have taken a great deal of pride & interest in my present regiment and in what I may say or do to procure the transfer asked for here, I do not wish to disparage that noble body of men. Should you think favorably of

my case I wish you to bear in mind that I wish to be transferred in a higher grade-a field officer position. I flatter myself capable of doing good service to my country in this last named grade. Should you desire testimonials from the Army I should be able to furnish them if you require-If I cannot be appointed to some of these new regiments-100 day men-now organizing, I desire you to consider my case & if I can be appointed to an old regiment I would accept the appointment.

With very high respect

I am Sir your most obdt sevt

Haynes E. Hudson

1st Lieut Adjt 1st Engr Regt. Mo. Vols. (late Bissells)

P.S. I have neglected to name the arm of service I desire to be transferred to. I will state that I prefer the infantry arm. My address till May 15th will be at this place. H.E.H.
