to His Excellency Richard Yates

Governer of Illinois

Honored Sir - I am out of business and necessity compels me to entreat my friends to do something for me - If you could give me some employment I would be under lasting obligations to you - I sent an application to the President accompanied with your kind favor but I fear it will avail nothing unless I could go to Washington. Should you want any dispatches borne to the Federal Departments and would be kind enough to commission me as bearer I would have an oppertunity to urge an appointment - My limited means are such at present as to prevent me making the trip on my own account

I have the honor to be

Your Obedient Servant

S. Emmons
