Hon Richard Yates

Worthy Governor

Senator Douglass has passed away this day we learn his remains will be lain away; Soon it will devolve on you to fill his place for the time being, and we have been speculating upon the choice. We May be hasty, but you will soon have it to do, and others we think will perhaps verry soon give their advice. Our folks wish me to write you and say that we think Hon O. H. Browning is the Man. First be cause he is the Man. 2nd be cause this portion of the Military tract has here to fore been passed by, and thirdly because he is one of the first men of Illinois, has worked hard for our principles when it cost something to stand for principle, and he has always been passed by.

Respectfully H.S. Thomas
