His Excellency

Richd Yates

Sir

The President has been kind enough to relieve me from duty with the 13th Army Corps. I am on my way to Washington to report in obedience to orders.

I know not what position may be assigned me - but I am very much inclined to ask a Command.

I had the honor to address you a note from N. Orleans inquiring if you could give me a suitable command. May I inquire if the organization of the 20,000 men to be raised for 100 days will be organized into brigades - or only into Regiments? Allow me to ask your Excellency if I can have one of these Regiments - if nothing preferable is to be had? The earliest reply by telegram to Washington - care Judge Trumbull - will be highly appreciated
