To His Excellency Governor Richard Yates, The undersigned your petitioner respectfully represents unto your Excellency that Christian T. Gerding a member of Comp G. 88 Regt Ill. Vol is a true union man, a man of some ability & quite a sober man. He has served for about two years & is desirous to get a Commission as Second Lieutenant of the Negro troops. He speaks & writes the English language well. As your petitioner has been acquainted with him for several years, your petitioner can well recommend him & would respectfully pray, your Excellency will please grant a Commission at Second Lieutenant of the Negro troops to said Christian T. Gerding.

And your petitioner will ever pray &c William H. Haase
