My Dear Sir

I have served my country in the capacity of a private soldier, as well as that of an officer & was desirous of again entering the service & came to Springfield for that purpose - but it being inconsistant with your established rules I failed to received an appointment - neither did I urge matters

nor insist in the least

I am now urged by my friends here to make application to you for any position where there may be a vacancy even in a buisness capacity. My merits or claims of something at your hands you have already acknowledged to Senator Ward &c

I have presented you with letters in my behalf from Hon J. S. Arnold Hon J. F. Farnsworth, Col Bell, Lt Col Dunam, Paymaster Kinzie, A. G. Troop, Justice Akin Senator J.D. Ward approved by Church Hilliard & Scripps & if necessary can obtain

any other recommendations from any responsible union men in Chicago.

There now being a vacancy caused by the death of Paymaster Winans of the Navy I should be happy to have you recommend me for that position immediately & letters of highest responsibility will be produced if necessary

Please refer to those letters from Hon J. D. Ward & others now in your possession

This will be presented to you by Mr Geo Stevens [Depy of?] the Supt. of Public Instruction & hope you will give him an answer as soon as convenient & you will oblige not only me but
