November 11th 3.

Col. Thomas O Osborn. Comd'g 39th Regt Ills. Vols. Morris Island. Charleston Harbor S.C.

Dear Colonel. I write you on behalf of a most worthy lady, a resident of this city whose son, Sergeant H.G. Smith of Co A. your regiment is reported to have been dangerously wounded and has lost one leg. The nature of his wounds are such that he will not soon be able to perform any kind of service and I would therefore urgently request that you will secure a furlough for him and facilitate his immediate passage to this city and I will feel myself personally obliged

Yours truly Governor
