Dear friend Prentis
I did want to see you before I left Quincy. I have a sincere desire in some way to get you in position again. I presume you are aware under our present rules of getting you a Colonelcy in an old Regt unless all Field Officers would destine in your favor.
I shall go to Washington in a few days, but I suppose nothing can be done in the way of the higher commands as it is plead the quota of such in all full.
Suppose I could get authority from War Dept for you to raise an infantry Regt. would it suit you? I do not know that I can do even this, but whatever I can do in any direction for you, I am
willing and anxious to make an effort for. I write at this to get at your views or any suggestions you may make as to what you think would suit and be attainable.
Write me on receipt of this & believe me
Truly Your friend
