Dear Gov

The bearer Maj N Grensel of the 7th Regt of Mo: Volunteers is the Officer I spoke of to you about when down last week.

He is the unanimous choice of the Fox River Regiment for their Col. And is also the choice of all of our people here. This will be a Model Regt and as Grensel is a citizen here we are all very anxious for his appointment. He reported the Regiment to Genl Fremont and has received permission to drill his Regiment for thirty days at this place. He was examined in St Louis as to his qualifications and passed.

Now what we wish is for you to give him his commission as Col. and transfer him from the 7th Regt to this., or if necessary will resign his commission as to the 7th and come to this. As I informed you Cook will not like to spare him. But the public service ought to be cared for first. This Regiment consists of 10 companies of infantry and two of cavalry. The clothing camp equipage arms & are all on the way. And they are to

mustered into service of the U S on Monday next by Capt Webb. Who is furnishing the equipment. The Col presents this in person as he is very anxious to return as soon as possible as he ought to be on the ground now all the time.

The recommendation for the other officers he has which is all satisfactory and I hope will meet with your approbation.

Truly & Sincerely Yours &c
