To His Excellency Richard Yates-

Accept my thanks for the Letters which I found with Mr. Woodworth soon after sending my telegram. They leave nothing to be desired and will render me essential service.

Your kindness and the rare courtesy of your most estimable lady will not be forgotten.

I only desire that it may be in my power, to assist, be it

never so little, in placing in a still more important position one of whose brilliant record of untiring devotion to duty and liberty every son of Illinois may be justly proud- If I return to the field - as I intend when this fund is raised - I would sooner serve under a commission from His Excellency Richard Yates than any man in America.

I have the honor to be, Governor, very respectfully

Your obd't serv't

E. B. Sherman
