To His Excellency

Govenor Yates

Pardon me for presuming upon your time and patience. I am a Soldier - was enlisted in the summer of 1862. for the 16th Regiment Illinois Inft. to serve the unexpired term of the Regts. that term expired the 24th of last May. I am still held can find out nothing from my Officers, and in my extremity have appealed to you. I have served faithfully my time. Why am I held? Is there no recourse?

Respectfully
