Belleville Ills. Aug 17th 1864.

Dear Sir,

On yesterday I addressed a letter to your honor, informing you, of my situation, in which I neglected to state, that the Salery as a private in the rank; is absolutely too Small to meet my demands. I have two children for which I have to pay $10.00 per month, my wife after 3 years and 4 months services in the United States Army is completely cripled up, so that she can not take care of herself, and also will soon bring into this world a young Soldier. I have reinlisted, and am bound to go again, therefore if there is any sort of a chance to promotion I hope that your honor will take my claim in preference of any other person as I, my wife, nor my children have

never received one cent from any person, or from any county, except the regular pay as a private in the ranks; again I will say that if any references is required, either in regard to qualification, character, or Political Principal, I think, I can show as good and true record as any other Soldier in the ranks; you will pardon me for troubling you much.

Yours &c.

Rudolph Wentzel.
