Governor Yates

Springfield Ills

Dear Sir: I am for the present compelled to remain at home and out of service. I regret very much that I must therefor decline the tender made so kindly to me by you of the position of Colonel of a Regiment of Infantry.

I hope the time will come when if this most infamous rebellion is not as I hope it will be soon suppressed, I will be able to render to my country the service that every true

man owes to his flag.

Very respectfully Yours

Jackson Grimshaw
