Rev. D. S. Altman

Pastor English Lutheran Church

Princeton, Ills.

Sir:

I am in receipt of your letter

with endorsement of Col. Carr, requesting a appointment as

Chaplain in the Army. The brief time I had to converse with you

did not give me the opportunity to say that it is necessary to secure

position as Chaplain for you to be elected by the Company Officers

of a regiment and recommended by the Colonel of the regt for Chaplain. In

addition it is also necessary to show that you are a regularly

ordained minister, certified by five or more ministers of your

own denomination, & recommending your appointment as Army Chaplain.

These requirements are imperative orders of the War Dept. I would

[then?] cheerfully confer the Commission if you can fill all the requirements.

Very truly Yours

Richd. Yates
