Hon Richard Yates

Gov of Illinois

Dear Gov

I have tendered my services to the President & asked him to confer upon me the appointment of Major Genl, or a Brigadier - the former I prefer - amongst the oldest, if not the oldest, graduates of the Military Academy from our State, I am desirous of contribute my share in upholding the Constitution & union of our country - and after twenty years service in the army, I believe I am fitted to take command quite as well as many who have been thus honored - I beg that you will write to the President & Secty of War & give me your assistance - this you once assured me you would do.

I want to take a part in Missouri - please write at once to Washington, also to me -

Yours Truly
