His Excellency R. Yates

Governor Il. [?]

Dear Sir,

My son Theodore F. Brown entered the Army in 1861 or early 1862 as a Lieutenant in one of the Companies of the 51st Regt. of Ill Troops, and is now a Captain in sais Regt. He was wounded in the head at the battle of Chicamauga, but in little time returned to his Regiment. At the repulse upon the attack on the rebel fortifications at Kinesaw Mountain, he was shot thro the left arm, breaking the larger + uper [illegible] bonesd, and has been conifined at home since August last. His arm is at present useless (?), and it may always remain so. He's yet unhealed + requires carefull attention. Yet his bodily health is good, + he seems himself fitted for the performance of any military duties except active operations in

the field. He has become tired of confinement, and requests me to ask of you, if in your power to bestow it, the assignment of some Military duty which he is capable of performing. He is about thirty years of age, a good scholar + person [?], and of excellent habits. Being wholly ignorant of Military matters, I know not what powers you possess [?] in the premises [?]- but I entertain the hope, that if your powers are limited, you would be willing to exert your influence in his behalf. Gen. Fuller is well acquainted with my son, + can give you all the requisite [illegible] information.

Permit me to congratulate you upon the glorious result of the late election. We have an honest + patriotic President for another term. Our own State too is redeemed, and with a majority in both Houses, I trust you will ben elected a Senator from this State..

I am very respectfully

W. H. Brown

[illegible] Dist of Ill.

Springfield Nov 26, 1864.

Respectfully returned to His Excy Gov. Yates. The Brig. Gen. Comdg. has no light duty to which he could assign this officer. His probable Col Prevost, Cmdg [illegible] Rend [?] could give him work suited to his condition if he were ordered to report to him.
