Hon Richard Yates

Sir

My son John W. Hampton was drafted in the last draft in the 12th congressional District, and in Washington County Illinois - was notified - went to Alton Ills. - was examined received - returned home to arrange his business - finished his arrangement and is now at Camp Butler to be sworn in. Now I wish to say to you that I am a widow - have six children, myself & them, all are dependent upon John W. Hampton for support and unless he can be released from service, we must suffer. John W. Hampton will do his duty, but while he is doing that I and his six sisters & brothers must suffer terribly this winter. Release him if you can relieve us.

Yours Truly

Elizabeth Hampton
