His Excellency Richard Yates:

My Dear Sir notwithstanding the ardious duties of your Official position, believing you the Soldiers true friend, may I not indulge the hope that these few lines which I adress you at the earnest request of my son who is suffering from a severe fit of sickness shall receive your attention. I have two sons in the Union army, one in Co. G. 50th Ills. infantry, reenlisted last January as veteran. The other a lad in his sixteenth year when he enlisted last March in Co. F. 66th Ills infantry; after passing through three, or four hard fought battles during the early part of Sherman's campaign: he was taken with a fever acompained with fits undoubtedly in consequence of hard marching and hard fitting.

The health of said boy is yet very poor, he was in the hospital at Rome Ga. for eight, or ten weeks, and is not able for duty yet, he is not likely to too be unless furloughed home to recruit his health. At his request I appeal to you as a patriot, a Christian, and a father, to lend your Official influance in his behalf to obtain a furlough home in order to recruit his health. His name is Andrew Jackson Blain born in Waukesha County. Wisconsin, April 23rd AD. 1848. It is not with any desire of depriveing our noble army of one soldier that I make this request, I consider it my duty as a Loyal Citizen of these United States, to make any, and all sacrifices necesary to put down, and crush out this accursed rebellion against the best government on Gods footsool. We are all right, and must succeed God, grant it.

Will you please have the goodness to write me a few lines at earliest convenience, and let me know if you can render the lad any assistance, or not. My post office is Abingdon. Knox Co. Ills.

I am Sir very respectfuly your fellow citizen.

John Blain.

P.S. My name is on the records of Orange L. U. L.
