This is a long story about Schimmelfening, but from all I hear of him I have no doubt he is a splendid soldier and that the public interests would be well served by his appointment to Col. Of one of our regiments. He is well known to Hecker and Seigel and I wish you would ask them about him before you appoint. [his?]Brother will talk with you about him. We want such men as Schimmelfening to lead our troops.
