To his Excelency Governor

             Richard Yates
                          Sir

Before leaving Alton, in the servise of the 100 days, I learned that General Roscrans wanted A cavelry company to be stationed At that plase, to assist the Reg't now there

I should like to Command such company, & would enquire if you would be willing to grant me the possition_ & A company of drafted men from this County & Madison, which is A serpolus & not needed elsewhere __
Perhaps you will remember that I raised A company for that Reg't Co, Il, & was refused the command by Col. Rogers, (I shall always believe it was because I was not a copperhead) which refusal was sustained on account of sum former pledges, yet the raising of the company cost me about one hundred & fifty dollars clear loss to me __
If such Cavalry, is still needed at Alton, please confur the favor upon your obt friend
                                                        B, M,, Cox
