To his Excellency Richard Yates,

                                              Sir,
Knowing you to be the Soldiers Friend, I have taken the liberty to ask a favor of you.
My only Son is at Camp Butler sick, and cannot come home till he gets his discharge papers, which he has been told are at Springfield waiting to be signed. Now Dear Sir if you can do anything to forward his papers to him, you will confer a great favor upon a poor soldier Boy, and his afflicted Mother. ________ Respectfully &c.
                                          Mrs. Daniel Baird
