                                   Washington City,
                                                December 12th 1864

Sir:

       The Secretary of War instructs me to transmit the enclosed copy of a report of the Judge Advocate General relative to Hiram Stanton, a Deputy Provost Marshall, now confined in the jail of Marion County, Ill., upon a charge of murder; and to request that you will give directions to have Stanton turned over to the military authorities for trial before a military tribunal, the homicide upon which the charge is based having been committed by him while in the discharge of his duty.
