   CONSUL FOR SEVERAL GERMAN STATES.

                        My dear Governor:

                                                    Previously to receiving your favor in regard to the representatives from Lake and Dupage I had operated upon Dr Sedgwick.  Sedgwick is unwell and believes himself unable to serve.  I found that he was not only physically but also politically sick.  He stated that he knew "the people of Dupage to be in favor of Dick Yates  for the Senate, and whereas he, (S.) could not conscientiously support the Governor, he preferred to resign."   Of course no impediment was laid in his way and Sedgwicks resignation must be in your hands ere this.  Yesterday I saw Mr Childs, the editor of the republican paper in Dupage, and our leading man.  He is for you, though not as emphatically as I might desire,  yet he did agree that no one should be nominated as S. successor, unless he stood pledged for you.  This, I think, you can rely upon.  The member from Lake I am not acquainted with, yet will endeavor to see him.     As ever, your friend

He has been operating on Sedgwick. Finds him sick- not only physically but politically- and that he said that he Knew his constituents were in favor of Yates and as he could not concientiously support him he should resign__Supposes you have received his Resignation ere this__

The Editor of their County paper (the leading man) is not as Emphatically for you as he could wish- but promises that Sedgwick's successor shall support you__

His successor will probably be Maj. Kelly. & he thinks you can rely on him___
