My dear Sir_
As I told you at Springfield the other day_ I sought an interview with our Member from Henry County, Your Mr. M. Ford, on the question of selecting U. S. Senators.
I had a long and satisfactory talk with him. He still persists in his determination not to be committed to anyone - until he gets to Springfield. He will be there early _ three days before the first day of the session. He is Most favorably inclined towards you; and My firm con-
viction is that he will give you his vote. His sympathies are all with you and he knows his Constituents are unanimous for you. He has written letters to leading men in the County asking their views on questions to come before the Legislature- including this Senatorial question_ & the responses are unanimous for you. It would be well for you to write him an autograph letter_ stating to him in substance, what you stated to me, on a certain subject_as that is the only difficulty in his way.
I am on my way East on a business trip east & can not return
till the middle of Jan. Would like to be at Springfield and assist you.
I will visit Washington in about ten days. I am not now aware of any occasion to use it but you would oblige me by giving me a word of recommend as to President _ in case I should have any matters to present to him, Direct to Me, Care of E.C. Ingersoll, Col. Loomis spoke of sending him a letter or something. I have received nothing from him. With hopes for your certain success I am very Truly,

Had a long & satisfactory talk with Ford from Henry County_ He found him inclined to your favor, but persisted that he would not committ himself until meeting of the Session _ he is corresponding with his constituents & getting their views on this & other questions. They are unanimously for you.
