New Orleans La Sept 5 1864.

Hon. Richard Yates

Springfield Ills.

Dear Sir

On the 1st September inst I was mustered out of the Service of the U.S. as Surgeon of 2nd Regiment Illinois Cavalry under the commission which I had the honor to recive from you Sept 2nd 1861, by reason of the expiration of my term of service, and at my own request, my health having been impaired from the effect of climate and long service.

I have felt proud of this commission and trust it has nor been borne unworthily; proud of the Governor from whose hands I received it, and whose name has been a synonym throughout the army, for all that was Ernest, loyal and devoted to the Union; proud of the great State of Illinois whose record has been so glorious and whose efforts so great for the preservation of the Country. In my heart I pray that the efforts and sacrafices she has made, may not hav been made in vain.

I am vry respectfully Your Obt Sert

J.B. Cutts
