My dear Sir:

I desire on behalf of some of the R. R. of the State of Illinois to make some arrangements with the Department of the West. & a letter from you to Fremont stating my standing, & that "my relations with McClellan & Banks and had heretofore been of the most intimate character" might serve to break down a web of circumlocution which I find has been woven around every branch of the Service. Excuse my trespassing on your time.
