In reply to your Excellency's letter of the 25th ult. in reference to the Exchange of Ills. soldiers, I regret to have to say that there is little or no prospect of there being any general Exchange very soon.

Genl. Canby, Com'd the Milt'y Division of West Mississippi has recently effected the exchange of some few hundred prisoners which may possibly include the Illinois troops you refer to, I have not yet received the rolls.
