Richard Yates,
Governor of the State of Illinois,
Sir,
I write you this, hoping it will not be out of place, to request of you as one of R.S. Nelsons warmest friends, to try to secure for him, some good appointment. he is one of the strongest Union men in the state, the first Union speech that was made in Southern Illinois was made by him, at the risk of having his head taken off, if he could get appointed to canvass Southern Illinois we would find him to be a powerful man, he has suffered greatly on
account of his Union sentiments in Jefferson County where he lived at the breaking out of the war. I think his principles and to secure him some appointment, his friends here are anxious for his success, he knows nothing of this application, do what you can for him, he is a strong friend of yours he will warmly reciprocate any favors from your hands.
