To His Exelancy
Gov Richd Yates
Springfield Ills
Dr Sir
Your petitioners would respectfully represent that Beri Serviss Jr a member of Co K 96th Ills vol Inf is now at Mound City Ills in the Hospital. That he is able to be conveyed home to his Parents and has been for a long time but is unable to obtain a furlough The authorities there refusing him so small a favor - He has become in consequence of such refusal very much discouraged and his early promise of restoration to health is much lessened The Boy should in all reason have a furlough to go home where he could be better cared for than in Hospital - The history of his case is as follows. He enlisted in the 96th Rgt Ills Vol in 1862 served faithfully till the Battle of Rasaca Ga in April last, when he was severely wounded in the foot, after many weeks of suffering his right leg was amputated at the Hospital at or near Jeffersonville Indiana, For a long time his care was considered hopeless, but he eventually recovered
and was sent to Mound City Ills. There he has been for a long time anxiously waiting for permission to go home to his Parents - He never will be fit for Army service again and why should he be Kept there - Your petitioners would therefore pray your Exelancy to interfere in his behalf and obtain for him a furlough if not a discharge from the service and your petitioners will ever pray &c
