Gov. R. Yates -

Dear Sir:

I am very anxious to get into a situation where I can serve my country and earn a support for my family. I would like to be Adjutant, or Quarter Master in a Regiment, but shall be glad to take a commission for any post that I can fill creditably and honorably. As I have lived

all my life in Illinois, I would far prefer going into an Illinois Regiment, but I fear, from what you wrote me before, you cannot give me a place among the Illinois troops. If you can, please do so. If you cannot, please favor me with an introductory letter to Gen. John C. Fremont, and I will try to get into one of the Missouri Regiments.

Please let me hear from you by return mail.

Very Respectfully,

B. J. F. Hanna
