Gov. Richd Yates
Springfield Ills.
D Gov.
The Bearer Mr. Fielding Powers is desirous of obtaining an appointment from The Treasy. Department in Connection with the River purchase of Cotton &c. He wishes Commendation to Mr Melen, Genl. Agent Treasy Dept.
I have known Mr. P. for Some time He formerly lived in Ills. but has been in this City for a year of two past. If appointed he would no doubt make an Active Agent. Whether you are Conversant Enough with these Matters or with Mr Melen to afford him any Assistance I know not. He will learn from you.
Very respectfully
Wm S Pope

Governor:
In behalf of Mr Wm Powers Nephew of Wm Powers I wish to say a word. For Sometime he has been Executive of officers on Board of The Gunboat Taylor and others. The River disagrees with him, he has been sick much of his time. He wishes to change his place or be discharged
If you Can do anything for him I shall be glad. He is a very Efficient active and worthy officer and in a place where he would have health, would be most serviceable.
He would make An Excellent Secretary.
I would rather do any work than "bore" you for such favors, but this is a Case of Merit. I think he would be an acquisition to any of the offices of Springfield if he would accept.
Yours &c
