OFFICE OF CHIEF OF ARTILLERY, Head Quarters, Department of the Susquehanna,

Harrisburg Pa., October 27, 1864

Governor

I regret that I did not have the pleasure of seeing your more than I did while you were here. I wished to talk with you in relation to my remaining in service after my three years shall have expired I am anxious to serve my country through the war and [knowing?] that as the Governor of a state which owes to you far more than to anyone else the proud position as the banner State so far as this war is concerned you ought and I think can command a powerful influence at Washington I request that you will see that I may be allowed to remain in service through the war The companies of my regiment I am informed are reenlisting and I can and have made myself useful both in the field and out of it I have endeavored to serve my country well and the different important and [responsible?] positions that

I have held both in the field and out of it under different Generals show that I have been appreciated I am now Chief of Artillery and Inspector General of the Department and of course am constantly occupied I would of course prefer being in the field always but the General commanding this Department needs my services now and of course I obey orders I have been now from home nearly two years and while in health sufficient to leave my room have never received but six days leave of absence in that time My term of three years service will expire about the 1st of March next and if the field officers of my regiment are all to be mustered out as their terms of service expire I desire to obtain some other good position under the President or from my own state I would like to obtain from the Secy of War a leave of absence for four days to go to Washington and will you please ask him for me I hope to get to Philadelphia on Saturday eve

Yours truly
