Hon Richd Yates
My Dear Sir
James A. McCandlefs who is a private soldier in Capt T. F. Vaughn's Springfield light Artillery Battery now at Little Rock Arkansas, is now at home here on Furlough until after the election. Mr McCandlefs desires to be discharged from the service -- for the following Reasons -- He is a poor man & has a large family who are dependent upon him for support -- His father & mother who also reside here are becoming almost helplefs from mature or old age & infirmity and they have no one to look after them or care for them but their son James. Under these circumstances he feels that he ought to get out of the service if possible -- His aged Parents & his wife also are exceedingly solicitores about the matter
Mr McCandelefs is a man of unquestionable good character -- a truly loyal man & only asks to be discharged as a matter of necessity on account of his helplefs Parents & family --
You will greatly oblige him & many of your friends here if you will procure an order for his discharge from the service
Yours very truly
