Sullivan Illinois Jan'y 11th 1862

Governor Yates

The enclosed handbill was largely circulated through this (Moultrie) County yesterday. It tells its own story. The Traitors here are in high carnival over the action of the democratic meeting in Springfield. They have taken the cue from the Traitors in your City and openly declare that this State will join the Rebels and that we shall have war in Illinois before the grass rises. I have thought it to be right to send you this sheet in order that you might be awake to what the rascals are doing. Our union men here are in fear of an outbreak in this county. Most of our Republicans are in the army. I shall be at their meeting on Saturday next and, if you desire it, will give you a Synopsis of their proceedings. There are over five hundred K. G. Cs. in this county and it was by their votes that J. R. Eden member of Congress elect from this, 7th, district was elected over McCarty. Mr. Eden is now in Springfield, Lobbying.

Respectfully yours

W. B. Porter
