His Excellency Richard Yates Gov of Illinois

Dear Governor

Much to my surprise I yesturdy learned from Mr Ferry that Mr Farwell was about to commence action at law to recover from us the ten thousand dollars he deposited with us as indemnity. This I can hardly believe for I to well understand this whole matter to believe any such [course?] would be taken without your consent and approval. I certanly should be very reluctount to believe you would allow this

course to be taken under any circumstances. My possition in the matter is well known to you. the deposit origuenely came to my hands unsought so far as was in my power I have been and still am your friend. If I am to be the target for all handy to fire at- if now a third party is to come in and take a [rake?] at me. I want to know it - perhaps I have in my desire to befrend you layed my self open to Mr Farwell but I think not. If he commences action against me I shall have to use such means as are with in my reach for self defence

I [rearly?] hope this matter may be closed in some way and leave the friendly relations existing between you and me undisturbed. If disturbed they must be, it certanly shall not arrise from any fault of my own. I have in this matter indevered to treat you honorably- [honestly?] fairly and in good favor. What ever you may think of me. I am your friend time will prove this to your satisfaction.

Yr [Truly?]
