Lieut Col J.E. Callaway

21st Ills Vols

Huntsville Alabama

Feb 23 1865

Answered March 11/65 Loomis Sec'y

Succeeds Wm A. Richardson in the Senate. I know that the brave boys in the fields will in the fullness of their great hearts most devoutly give thanks to the Most High on that auspicious day.

But your time is valuable & I will not afflict you "with much speaking". I hope you will pardon my temerity Governor in taking the liberty of asking your kind intercession in behalf of the gallant old regiment I have the honor to command. It will be an act of justice to the regiment once led by the illustrious old hero U.S. Grant & a favor to many of your best friends if you will have the goodness to see Sect'y Stanton, or Mar Genl Fry or whoever else has charge of the matter & ascertain if this regiment is to have any recruits assigned to it.

Applications have been made & several letters written but with what success I am unable to say. We have not received a single recruit assigned us nor any information that there would be.

Please do all in your power to have if possible 800 recruits assigned us. We have now an aggregate of 210 present and absent as shown by my morning report - there being just 115 present for duty, the rest being on detached service, absent, wounded & etc.

Such is the command of a Lieut. Col who has seen within three months of four years of active service & has had the appointment of Colonel more than a year by the grace and justice of your Excellency's favor - however upon the recommendation of my superior officers.

Governor I will most highly appreciate anything you can do to favor us and I would be most happy to hear from you when you have sufficient leisure.

Allow me to subscribe myself with the highest consideration of respect.

Your friend and obt servant

J.E. Callaway Lieut Col
