Hon. S.M. Cullom

Dr. Sir-

I have just learned that in a quiet way Gridley is making an effort to secure the appointment of Col. Brisco as P.M. of this place.-In this Gridley is influenced solely by the "Almighty Dollar."-He wants the P.O. moved back to his Street, on which he has a number of business houses, and as Mr. Allin has refused to second his efforts in this regard (though Gridley made liberal offers to induce him to do it) he has pitched before Brisco-lately appointed Comdr of the Penitentiary-to accomplish his object.

I need not say to you, that Brisco is not the choice of our people for this Office.-I am quite sure you will work for Allin, and, in view of this move, let me urge upon you to have the appointment made and confirmed before you leave.- When much stronger influences were brought to bear against Allin, 4 years ago, he triumphantly succeeded, as I am sure he would now, if a protracted contest was had but, he nor any of us want this, and I hope you will at once have the appointment made.-Brisco has said Yates is in his favor. Don't believe it. I have written to him. See how this is and let me know, -Have also written to to Trumbull though I very well know that in this matter

the Dept. will be governed mainly by your advice.-

Yours Truly

Jesse M. Fell

P.S. Tell [illegible] of this move of Gridley's. It would not surprise me if Brisco goes on to Washington.- He had better attend to the duties of his present appointment.-I will send this to the care of Govr. Yates, as I don't know where you put up.

Henry Kerau is a Rout Agent on the I.C.R.R. now running between here and Centralia. At my suggestion the late Wm Lovejoy had him appointed. He has made an excellent agent, as the P.M.'s on the rout will bear testimony, and I trust will be continued. I don't know that any effort is necessary to continue this class of agents, but hope you will look into the matter, and if you find it necessary, Secure his continuance in the position he is now so well qualified to fill. His pay is only $800 yearly.-The P.M. Genl upon recommendation of the Rep. of the Dist, makes these Appointments.

Jesse M Fell

I concur hartily in what is stated above with reffirence to Kerau as Rout agent he has been faithful & Efficient
