East Fort Miss: January 15 1865

We, the undersigned Officers of the 72d Illinois Infy Vols., having been associated for over two years, with Jacob Schanck Esq. late 1st Lieutenant of "I" Co. of this Regiment, do cordially unite in expressing our high appreciation of him as a brave and energetic officer : one even capable of, and willing to perform the duties required of him : a strict disciplinarian, and withal - well versed in all that is military -- and if, at any time, he should again enter the army, we would recommend him to those in authority, as an intelligent and worthy man, obedient and respectful, and finally, a good soldier.

Dear Sir

I have the honor to request that you will "speak a good word" for me at the War Department. As I am desirous either to be retained in service with the three year men of 1st Army Corps; (Who will doubtless be organized in one or more battalions after the muster out of those whose term of enlistment was one year) or of receiving appointment in the regular United States Infantry.

Original entry into service May 13th 1861 Company "C" 17th Illinois Infantry. Discharged after the the evacuation of Corinth Miss. On surgeons certificate of disability. Cause typhoid fever. Re-enlisted August 13th 1862. in Company "I" 72d Illinois Infantry (1st Board of Trade) Commissioned 1st Lieutenant Sept 4th 1863 mustred out Dec 2nd 1864. Expiration of term . . Enlisted in 1st Army Corps. February 13th 1865. Appointed 2nd Lieut October 6th 1865. The enclosed testimonial give my --

standing in the 72nd, and I trust that my record while a member of this regiment will compare favorably with it.

Very Respectfully
