My dear Col,

Allow me to express to you my regrets at the necessity which compels you at this time to resign your position in the Cav arm of the service - a position which to my knowledge you have filled with so much credit to yourself and benefit to the govt. Should an opportunity ever present itself for me to be of any assistance to you in forwarding your wishes, I beg you will not fail to allow me to render it as I know of no one who I would take more real pleasure in rendering as a gallant officer, and perfect gentleman.

Very truly your friend,

George Stoneman

Maj. Gen.

To Col. H. Capron

Louisville, Ky

My resignation was after the Battle of Nashville on Surgeons Certificate of Dis -- from injury rece'd at the Battle of Franklin
